Thinking of Adopting a Rabbit?
There is much to consider before taking on any rabbit, rescued or not and we would ask that you take the time to invest in and read a good starter book while you're at the "thinking about it" stage.
Rabbits can live from 6-8 years and need to be handled regularly to ensure they are tame and friendly. They need to have a large secure hutch for winter, the largest you can afford. The rabbits must have enough room to have a good hop back and forward and be able to stretch out to sleep. Even small breed rabbits need plenty of room, we really only recommend hutches of 4' and over. In summer the rabbits can have access to a secure run with perhaps a smaller hutch for shelter attached or within a large run. Give your rabbits plenty to stimulate them, tunnels, hidey holes etc will maintain your rabbit's interest and encourage them to excercise.
It is important to keep up with bun's vaccinations as they are at risk of the dreaded Myxi and VHD. Our rabbit's are all vaccinated prior to rehoming so it's just a case of getting the boosters every year.
It's also vital that parents are just as keen to have the new pets as the kids! Their interest can wane a bit so be prepared to take on some of the cleaning and feeding duties! Even so, it's really important to teach the importance of taking responsibility for your new animals for the duration of their life.
At Animal Concern, we only adopt our rabbits in pairs or where there is an existing bun. We do not advocate breeding so any males will have to be castrated. It really is a match-making game with all our rabbits - we try to find them the perfect comapanion and pairing up takes time and patience! Sometimes there's fur flying at first but generally it works out! Most of our buns come in single and go out in loving relationships!
