Getting the caging right for small furry pets is very important for their health and welfare and therefore pretty high on our list when we are considering new homes for any smallies we have in care. We feel that a lot of the commercially sold caging is just not big or appropriate enough for the permanent housing of small pets and will advise you on what we feel IS appropriate. In general go as big as you can afford or get creative and make something yourself. Have a look at the examples here.

Gerbils are, by nature, incredibly accomplished diggers and chewers! They bore easily and there is nothing worse than seeing gerbils gnawing away at the bars of a tiny hamster cage! Gerbils do not climb as much as other rodents and so a wire cage isn't really suitable at all - they will simply not benefit from the height.
Old fish tanks are perfect for creating gerbilariums, the most creative housing for these tenacious tunnelers and the photos here show some set up with peat and hay layers before the gerbils went in (some "after" shots to come soon).
Any large, deep plastic tank is okay as long as there are no bits where the gerbils can get purchase with their teeth!
Deeply filling with shavings also works although tunnels can't form as in a peat setup. Include lots of tubes and hidey holes to get the tunnel effect with shavings and ensure water and food is not going to get buried.
