We made the mistake one day of arranging to collect some bald rats and our Chipmunks just days after losing one of our bunnies and that's how Honey came into our lives. I never wanted a permanent house bunny as all our old/ill bunnies come into the house and that's enough bunny pooh for me, but Honey was another matter. Within days she'd learned how to use the cat flap, and like a cat, never dirties in the house. When she was neutered and later had to have her incisors removed, she slept on our bed to recuperate. Sometimes she sneaks up when we're at work and dozes with the cats. We've had to fit a baby gate to stop her from jumping on us in the middle of the night for cuddles. She is a huge French Lop and it clears the bed of cats when she launches herself! She is so soft, I could never put her out. She loves to pop out now and again though and has 3 main boyfriends outside; Miles, Davros and Ronnie. They are not as infatuated with her as she is with them but she turns a blind eye to their indifference.
We adopted Bubbles the blind kitten under similar circumstances. We had just lost our beautiful 11 month old Tonkinese kitten Fabian with neurological problems. For us a blind kitten presented less problems than a kitten that Chris had to carry everywhere, hold up whilst he used the tray and sit with him on his knee so he could eat. Blindness is a doddle compared to that and she is a fearless madam who happily plays on the rabbit house roofs (6 foot tall). She also plays for hours with 3 of our other older cats who should know better!
We have had many rats over the last 12 months and a notable one is Luther. When I saw him at Amber's, we had to have him. He was stir crazy, tailless and mental. If I'd been kept in a cage with him for any length of time I'd have been tempted to eat his tail! Despite neutering, he refuses to play nicely with our boys but lives idyllically with the girls. He loved a good bite when we first got him but has matured into a wonderful rat. I can literally do anything with him; turn him on his back and blow raspberries on his tummy, tickle him until he literally laughs, and he loves it. His idea of a good night is watching TV with his parents, having a sip or two of Daddy's beer and some of Mummy's chocolate! He encourages the girls to be braver and sit on our knees. Our latest rat is Gramps. My beloved Kevin moved out of his cage when his best friend died and into my office. He point blank refused to go and live back in the cage(not that he spent much time in it anyway) and after Chris managed to put trunking around most of the wires so I had electricity and telephone, we decided we may as well move his bed and tray in and leave him to it. He cold shouldered all the friends we tried with him, running away and looking over his shoulder at them like the Devil was after him. Amber mentioned the old boy and I just wondered if it would work so Gramps joined the mad house. Kevin is over the moon, he loves his new friend and they sleep like two old men, curled up like babies together. Gramps is a bit unsure about what to do with all the space he has now but I'm sure he'll get there. Their days may be numbered, but they'll be happy, every one.
Honey the Lop, Bubbles and Gramps all hailed from our North branch. Bubbles had been with us several weeks and Gramps over a year!
Luther came from our Millom fosterer.
